Driving suspension amnesty for Lorain County is here again! The last time they did this was in March, 2011. Then they gave it the cutesy name of “march madness.” They might think that losing your license is cute because your employer shut down or cut your hours, but it is not a joke. The thing that is a very sad joke is that not every county imposes driving suspensions for not paying your child support. Don’t you feel lucky to have your child support case in Lorain County?
A child support suspension is pretty much at the whim of your child support case worker. Not much due process here. If they tire of dealing with you, one press of a button, and you have a driving suspension. You probably agree that it is totally unfair especially in a county that has no real bus service (they cut that back to avoid government layoffs), and taxi service that seems to come and go. I think it is more in the gone mode now.
The thing that most amazes me about this whole child support driving suspension amnesty is that they should be doing this every day of every month to get people who want to work, need to work, and want to pay their support to get back on the road legally. When we are not in an “amnesty” month the standards to reinstate your license vary from case to case and from case worker to case worker. That might be the new definition of injustice.
For the procedures look at the graphic. It is a copy of the flyers posted at the Elyria Municipal Court. They are the same as the March Madness:
- Pay one month of support.
- Pay the BMV reinstatement fee of $25
- To make it happen call the CSEA at 440-284-4401, or at 440-284-4596
You have until the end of September, 2011 to play this little charade with the CSEA to get your license reinstated. Remember, this will get your license back so long as there are no other suspension active on your license. If you are otherwise suspended, or canceled, this will only clear this suspension, which is a very good thing. If you have other excessive reinstatement fees, you might want to file bankruptcy.
One of my clients had nine different suspensions and forfeitures on his license. He took advantage of this driving suspension amnesty, cleared the child support suspension, and now has a valid Ohio driving permit. If you want to keep your Ohio driver’s license for more than a few months, it is time to come clean and pay your child support every week as you have been ordered. The up side of this is that it will help you avoid felony conviction for not paying support, another, unique, Lorain County trick.
You may be able to tell that I think the way child support is enforced in Lorain County by holding your driver’s license hostage is an unfair joke. If the government wants to play this game, then give the us adequate and reliable public transportation first. On the other hand, I do not condone you not supporting the children you brought into this world. Your kids need a responsible father or mother, NOW.
